Because let’s be honest… as entrepreneurs, we’re thinking about revenue, payroll, growth, stability, and the pressure that comes with carrying responsibility. We want to give. We want to live open-handed. But we also don’t want to look back and think, Why did I do that? or I didn’t think that through.

So let’s talk about it—generosity with wisdom.

Our Family Motto: Faith, Gratitude, and Generosity

My husband and I have a phrase that has become a cornerstone in our home. It’s literally printed on a plaque someone gave me because we say it so often:

Live a life of faith, gratitude, and generosity.

We want our girls to grow up with that as a normal way of life. Not just something we talk about—something we practice.

But Here’s the Tension

The moment you decide you want to be generous, you immediately run into the next question:

Okay… but how do we do this with wisdom?

Start Here: Bring It Before the Lord

I know some people won’t love this answer because it feels obvious, but it matters:

Before you do anything else— bring it before the Lord.

Sometimes God puts something on your heart so clearly that you know. You’re moved. You feel the nudge. You don’t need to overthink it—you just respond.

“Okay, Lord. I hear You.”

Two Different Scenarios

There are really two “giving moments”:

The clear nudge (you know you’re supposed to do it—don’t talk yourself out of obedience).
The unclear tension (you’re unsure, asking questions, needing wisdom).

Both require faith. But they’re not the same.

The Heart Check: What’s Under the Question?

If you’re asking things like:

“How much should I give?”
“Should I give to this or that?”
“What’s the right number?”

It’s worth pausing and asking what’s happening underneath that.

Because sometimes—if we’re being honest—we’re trying to find the bare minimum we can give and still feel like we did the “generous” thing.

That might sound harsh, but I’m not pointing fingers. I’ve been there too.

Questions That Will Tell You the Truth

Ask yourself:

Where am I being selfish?
Where am I holding on too tightly?
Am I anxious because I’m trusting my money more than I’m trusting God?

That’s not condemnation—that’s clarity. And clarity is a gift.

How to Give Without Being Taken Advantage Of

Once your heart is in the right place—once you’re genuinely open-handed—the next step is practical:

Do some research.

Because yes, we want to give as the Holy Spirit leads. But we also need to be wise. You can be generous and still do due diligence.

Do Your Due Diligence Before Large Giving

If you’re giving a meaningful amount:

Verify the organization is reputable
Understand what your gift is funding
Check leadership integrity and transparency
Make sure it aligns with what you can truly stand behind

Relational Equity Matters

For us, when a church or mission organization comes to us and we have relational equity—meaning we know them, trust them, and understand their mission—we’re much more willing to lean in.

But even then, we still consider:

Where are we already giving?
What have we committed to?
Can we allocate for this new opportunity without neglecting other responsibilities?

Can You Be “Too Generous”?

Honestly? I don’t think you can be “too generous” in the way people usually mean it.

Because generosity isn’t about the amount. It’s about the heart posture.

You can be generous by giving the only cash you had in your wallet—whether that was $20 or $100. That’s still generosity.

But You Can Be Unwise

You can be taken advantage of.

You can give without discernment.

You can give emotionally without thinking clearly.

So here’s the balance:

You can’t be too generous… but you can be uninformed.

The Freedom of Open-Handed Living

When you come to the Lord with surrender and say:

“God, whatever You want… I want to be a flow-through.”

Things get exciting.

Because you start noticing opportunities.

Needs begin to surface.

Kingdom-building moments show up in ways you didn’t expect.

And it’s not heavy—it’s freeing.

A Simple Framework: Generous + Wise

Here’s what I want you to remember:

Be Open-Handed, Not Naïve

Start with the heart: surrender and obedience
Check your motives: are you clinging too tightly?
Do the research: verify before large gifts
Consider your current commitments: generosity needs clarity
Then give freely: not tight-fisted— informed and joyful

Bottom Line

Yes—you can be generous without being reckless.

Because generosity is a condition of the heart… and wisdom is how you steward it.

Give with love. Give with clarity. Give with discernment.

It’s a beautiful way to build the Kingdom of God.

If you want to make it as an entrepreneur, you need two things: wild ideas —and you must be wild enough to believe they’ll work . That stubborn, Elle-Woods-level confidence (“Why wouldn’t this work?”) is the spark that keeps you moving when logic says stop.

A Real-World Example:

We recently faced a “good” opportunity. Using the filter:

Wisest move? Say no .

It wasn’t easy, but afterward, God confirmed the decision—new business came in that required the very time we kept free.

5 Keys to Building a Thriving Business and a Thriving Family

Can you really build a thriving business and a thriving family at the same time?

It’s one of the most common and heartfelt questions I hear from entrepreneurs, ministry leaders, and anyone in high-demand leadership roles.

The tension is real: if your business is booming but your family is struggling, you’ve lost what matters most. For faith-driven and value-driven leaders, our work is often our ministry—and when we pour ourselves into it fully, it’s all too easy to lose balance.

After years of walking through this myself—sometimes failing and learning the hard way—I’ve discovered five essential principles that allow both your business and your family (or personal life) to thrive together.

1. Be Real – Honesty Builds a Strong Foundation

When my husband and I were in the early years of raising children, life was already full. We had a toddler, a baby on the way, his business was growing, and he also volunteered to general contract a church building project.

It sounded noble, but in reality? It was too much.

We missed family dinners. Late nights became normal. Our kids felt the absence.

When the project ended, we looked at each other and said, “We made the wrong call.” That honesty changed everything for us.

From then on, we adopted the mindset of “No for now, not forever” —especially in seasons with small children, sleepless nights, and heavy demands. Being real meant setting boundaries and running every decision through the filter of “How will this impact our family?”

2. Be Consistent – Keep Your Word

Consistency isn’t just good for business—it’s critical for relationships.

If I tell my kids a call will take 20 minutes, but it consistently runs two hours, the message is clear: “Work comes first.”

Instead, I’ve learned to:

Set clear expectations (“This call will be 30 minutes, but it might be 45.”)
Keep hard stops on my calendar.
Allow exceptions only when absolutely necessary.

Consistency teaches your family they can trust your word. It also models healthy boundaries for anyone who might follow in your footsteps—whether they’re your children, spouse, employees, or peers.

It’s one thing to say family comes first. It’s another to live it out .

If I claim that my spouse or kids matter more than my work, my actions have to prove it. That might mean:

Scheduling dinners and protecting them like important meetings.
Ending calls on time—even if a client wants “just five more minutes.”
Planning downtime and sticking to it.

Intentionality means setting boundaries and following through. It also means recognizing when you’ve drifted and correcting quickly.

4. Be Fun – Show the Good Side of Business

Too many kids grow up only hearing the struggles their parents face at work or in ministry. If we’re not careful, our family’s frame of reference for business becomes only the stress and challenges.

Instead, we need to show the exciting parts:

Celebrate wins together.

Point out the freedom that comes from a well-run business (“We can drop everything and go to the lake because we’ve built flexibility into our work.”).

Let’s be real—leaders today are facing a confidence crisis.

Between the whiplash of the last six years—global pandemics, economic instability, rapid tech shifts, AI overload, and social media unpredictability—it’s easy to feel like nothing we do really sticks. If you’ve ever felt like you're just noise in the chaos, wondering whether your leadership still matters, you’re not alone.

And if you’ve found yourself saying, “I’m trying so hard, but it feels like I keep failing,” we want you to know: failure is not the end. In fact, it might be your beginning.

At Overflow Worship, we believe leadership is worship in action. And what we do on the hard days often matters more than what we do on the easy ones. So let’s talk about how to rebuild when your confidence takes a hit.

1. Slow Down and Remember the Truth

Let’s be honest—our world is filled with strong opinions. Especially when it comes to the intersection of faith and culture, there’s no shortage of heated conversations. But for Christian leaders—whether you're in ministry, business, parenting, or everyday life—the real challenge isn’t about choosing sides. It’s about learning to lead from conviction rather than pressure.

In this video, we explore some of today’s most talked-about cultural topics: the Easter Bunny, Taylor Swift, Halloween, modesty, and the movie Wicked . At first glance, it might seem like a random list, but here’s the thread—they all invite us to consider how we’re leading, what we’re consuming, and how we’re influencing others.

The Power of Conversations Over Condemnation

One of the most important takeaways? These are conversations worth having. Not for the sake of argument, but for the sake of wisdom.

Whether you're a parent wondering what to tell your kids about Santa Claus, or a leader trying to navigate modesty culture in youth ministry, the same principle applies: We need to filter our decisions through scripture, seek wisdom from trusted community, and lead from a place of conviction—not legalism.

Parenting from a Place of Grace and Truth

The church has historically funneled leadership potential straight into ministry. For the first time in a decade, the church in America isn’t seeing the rapid decline that’s been talked about for years. In fact, recent studies show that the Christian population is beginning to steady. It might not be a major growth spike, but it's not shrinking like many people think.

This is really encouraging, especially for those of us who are leaders and business owners living out our faith in the marketplace. It means there are more people like you than you realize—faith-driven entrepreneurs, leaders, employers, and employees—who are building businesses and serving others with eternal purpose.

Faith-Based Culture Is Growing in Surprising Places

Entertainment is leading the way

Faith-based entertainment is on the rise again. The Chosen recently broke box office records, which is incredible when you think about how rare that is for a faith-based project.
