When God Seems Silent: Do These 4 Things
When God Feels Silent: A Christian Entrepreneur’s Guide to Wise Decisions
As a Christian business owner or leader, you’ll face crossroads that impact more than revenue—they affect teams, clients, and your family. But what do you do when you’re asking God for direction and the heavens seem quiet? Is lack of clarity a “no”…or an invitation to walk by faith with wisdom?
This practical guide distills a simple, biblical process you can use anytime you’re weighing a big decision—new partnerships, a major pivot, shutting down a division, stepping into (or out of) a volunteer or leadership role, or navigating a family-impacting choice.
The Leadership Weight: Silence Isn’t a Vacuum
Even if you lead solo, your choices ripple into your household and community. That’s why decision paralysis feels so heavy—especially when the pros and cons look evenly matched. God’s apparent silence isn’t punishment; it’s often an invitation to draw near, surrender outcomes, and apply Spirit-led wisdom.
The 4-Step Framework for Faith-Driven Decisions
1) Pray First—Together and On Your Knees
When a decision is consequential, don’t just say “we’ll pray about it.” Stop and actually pray—with your spouse or a trusted friend if possible. Posture matters because it signals surrender, unity, and dependence.
Prayer focus prompts
- “Lord, we truly want what You want.”
- “Search my motives; purify my desires.”
- “Give us wisdom and align our steps.”
This isn’t a ritual; it’s an act of surrender that invites God’s presence and peace into the moment.
2) Surrender—Outcomes, Timelines, and Control
It’s easy to say, “God, whatever You want,” until the “whatever” costs us reputation, comfort, or momentum. Real surrender means:
- Releasing the outcome you prefer
- Laying down the timeline you wish would happen
- Trusting God if the answer is “not now,” “no,” or a redirection
Try this prayer:
“Father, I surrender the result, my anxiety, and my expectations. Lead, and I’ll follow—regardless.”
3) Ask the Best Question Ever
Borrow this clarifying filter (popularized by Andy Stanley) that has helped countless leaders cut through fog:
“In light of my past experiences, present circumstances, and future hopes and dreams—what is the wise thing to do?”
Not the easiest thing. Not merely the right thing in a legalistic sense. The wise thing.
How to use it
- Past experiences: What have you tried before? What worked? What harmed your family, team, or soul?
- Present circumstances: What’s already on your plate? Is now a wise time to add more?
- Future hopes & dreams: Will this choice create the life, margin, and mission-alignment you’re aiming for?
Wisdom honors your calling and your capacity.
4) Take a Faith Step—Then Ask God to Confirm
At some point you must move. After praying, surrendering, and applying wisdom, choose a direction and ask God to confirm or correct your steps as you go.
A simple next-step prayer:
“Lord, this is where we feel led. Please confirm our steps—or close the door.”
What confirmation can look like
- Unexpected opportunities that require the margin you protected by saying “no”
- Provision or momentum that affirms the path
- Peace that settles as you obey
A Real-World Example:
We recently faced a “good” opportunity. Using the filter:
- Past: Similar yes’s had strained our family.
- Present: Our plate was already full.
- Future: We value margin for family, creativity, and business growth.
Wisest move? Say no.
It wasn’t easy, but afterward, God confirmed the decision—new business came in that required the very time we kept free.
If God Seems Silent…Move With Wisdom
Silence doesn’t mean absence. Often, God invites you to walk in the wisdom He’s already placed in you through Scripture, the Spirit, and sanctified common sense.
Recap the framework
- Pray (for real, and if possible, together)
- Surrender (outcomes, timelines, control)
- Ask the wisdom question (past, present, future)
- Take action (and ask God to confirm your steps)
Reflection Questions for Christian Leaders
- Which part of this process do I usually skip—prayer, surrender, wisdom, or action?
- What does my past warn me about repeating?
- What do my present commitments make unwise to add?
- What do my future hopes require me to protect now?
